CHAPTER 28

ZOEY

I can’t help my giggle at Brody’s expression. We’re snuggled up in my bunk somewhere in the heart of the US as we make our way from Cleveland to Detroit. I’m exhausted from another night of leaving everything I have up on that stage, but I’m not too exhausted to spend time with this enigma of a man who has managed to take over my every thought.

I’m not so naïve to think we’re meant to be. I’m not sure that’s true because that’s just not something I believe in, fate and all that shit, but I’m immersing myself in the moment...and I’m wanting these moments to last longer.

We’ve got the bunk curtain open to prove we’re not up to any shenanigans. Everyone else is awake and in the front cabin watching a movie as they wind down from tonight’s show—everyone, that is, until Jessa passes through the bunks. She puts on her best flirty face for Brody, and as soon as she’s past us, it’s the slight roll of the eyes and the little snarl on his lips that forces a giggle from my own lips.

“Not a fan?” I ask softly.

He shakes his head and presses a kiss to my lips. “There’s only one chick on this bus I’m a fan of.”

“Chick?” I ask.

“Yep. C-H-I-C-K. A creative, hot, incredible, captivating, knock-out.” He ticks off each word as he keeps count of the letters on one hand, and I can’t help but laugh.

I narrow my eyes at him. “You came up with that really fast.”

“Thank God my speed impresses you.” He wiggles his eyebrows suggestively.

“Hey, speed wasn’t an issue that night in Denver,” I say softly, suddenly feeling the need to defend him from his own sex joke.

His hold tightens around me, and I feel warm and safe in his arms. “The only time issue I had that night was that there just wasn’t enough of it.”

“Thankfully we still have five weeks left on this tour together,” I muse.

He hums in agreement, but we’re both quiet for a minute. I don’t know what he’s thinking, but I’m suddenly struck with the fact that this tour will come to an end in just five short weeks. And then what?

Then I’m a dancer who wants to be on television but doesn’t have a job, and he’s still a rock star.

Do I go back to Atlanta?

I don’t want to go back to Atlanta.

Do I go back to Ethan’s?

I don’t want to go back to Ethan’s.

I want to stay right here, snuggled in Brody’s arms. Forever.

“Hey,” he says quietly once Jessa passes back the other way. “Where’d you just go?”

I shake my head a little and force a smile. “Nowhere.”

“Tell me.” His dark eyes are a little worried, and while I want to calm whatever apprehension he has, I also want to share mine with him. It just feels like a burden we could share so we could overcome it as a team.

A team.

I suddenly want to be a team with somebody. I’ve never wanted that before.
